The protector is located between the pump intake and the motor.  Its primary function consists of:

• Protect the motor from being contaminated by the well fluid.

• Allow pressure equalization between the downhole pressure and the motor's internal pressure.

• House the thrust bearing, which absorbs the axial thrust from the pump.

• Connects the intake to the motor by shaft and coupling.
